The Veuve Nature Reserve was established in 1987 by the Royal Society for Nature as a safe haven for the critically endangered Seychelles flycatcher. Within the 15 hectare plot, there is an information centre which manages the Vueve Reserve and the environment of La Digue. The primary focus of the centres work is focused on the Paradise Flycatcher, however, they also undertake regular monitoring of rare swiflets, sea turtles and other common land birds. The centre's staff are happy to lead short guided tours of the reserve, which will present opportunities to see nesting sites and elusive birds.
There are two possible species of native freshwater terrapin to be found in the Veuve Nature Reserve, the yellow bellied (Pelusios seychellensis) and the star bellied (Pelusios subniger). These two species have suffered greatly over the last two decades due to pollution, predation and development of marshland. There are now estimated to be fewer than 250 of either species left in the Seychelles. However, the Nature Protection Trust is now running a captive breeding programme on Silhouette island, reintroducing terrapins into secure reserves.
