L'Union Estate is a national heritage site situated on the southern side of the island and well worth a visit. Located at the centre of the estate is an old plantation house, flanked by a giant granite boulder and spacious paddock for the estate's horses. As you cycle or walk down to the estate you will witness the fascinating Union Boulders, covering an acre of land, and uncannily reminiscent of an elephant's trunk. This spectacular geological formation was formed gradually by the ongoing forces of nature and is in fact classified as a National Monument.
L'Union Estate encapsulates La Digue's historic culture and traditions, allowing visitors to step back in time and envisage what life was like on the island before the intrusion of the modern world. Here you will be able to see a traditional copra mill and kiln, observe the behaviour of the estate's giant Aldabra tortoise population or simply stroll around the majestic Plantation House.
Due to the relatively small size of La Digue, much of it can be explored on foot. We can offer a half day guided walking tour of the island lead by an expert local guide, who will help you discover some of the islands hidden treasures and provide information on local wildlife.
A self-led trek up to Eagle's Nest Mountain (Belle Vue) will not only provide you with spectacular views of the island, but will also be an interesting journey of discovery. The gentle climb through Belle Vue may encompass an amount of interaction with locals, of whom pride themselves on being a close society who extend their warmth and friendliness to visitors. For those seeking a more challenging climb, a hike on the tip of the Nid Aigle 'iceberg' is a worthwhile opportunity to grasp.
The Seychelles Paradise Flycatcher is the symbol of La Digue, but unfortunately is currently one of the rarest birds in the world, with an estimated 200 pairs remaining. It is one of only seven endemic Seychelles bird species to still be listed on the IUCN Red List of critically endangered species Fortunately the future is looking bright for these incredible birds as breeding programmes are now underway within the island.
