Pacific to Caribbean Rainforests, Marine Life & Turtle Conservation

This journey from the Pacific to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica takes you to some of Central America's best wildlife and marine life viewing opportunities. It also provides an intense experience of rainforest, cloud forest, marine turtle research and conservation.

For wildlife and marine life, the Corcovado National Park in the Osa Peninsula is a must for any visit to Costa Rica. The area has been described by National Geographic magazine as '..the most wildlife intense place on earth', both because of its primeval forest and abundant offshore life. The western side of the Corcovado provides more than 30 miles of beach, where the rainforest meets the Pacific Ocean. Populations of howler, capuchin, spider and squirrel monkeys are so healthy along the coast that they live in closer proximity than you are ever likely to find elsewhere.

Offshore, humpback whales from both the northern and southern hemispheres migrate. 17 kilometres from the coast of the northern Corcovado is the Caño Island Biological Reserve. Aside from Cocos Island way out in the Pacific, this is where you will find the country's best marine life, both at the surface and beneath it. Dolphins are a feature of most visits to the island. Olive Ridley turtles and manta rays are also often seen at the surface and below. The coral reefs and steep drop-offs provide excellent snorkelling if you wish, with some large shoals of fish and pelagic visitors such as sharks and barracudas. We can pre-arrange diving for certified divers.

The wildlife and marine life highlight for us on the Caribbean coast is an 'on location' experience at what was originally an Endangered Wildlife Trust and Rainforest Concern project conservation project site. It was established to protect one of Central America's most important nesting grounds for the giant Leatherback Turtles. It also protects an area of rainforest, the future protection of which your visit with us helps to protect.

Leatherbacks are the largest of the marine turtles, with the biggest measured specimen some 2.4 metres in length.  Between mid-March and early June, hundreds of leatherbacks come to the Pacuare Reserve to lay their eggs. Whilst they can move around freely in water, their quest to lay eggs is a monumental struggle. A pregnant female must first locate a beach and then drag her huge body five or more metres out of the sea using fins designed for water. These same fins then need to dig a metre deep hole in which she lays her eggs, before covering them back over with sand. You can't help but feel the strain of her quest and gain a sense of her vulnerability out of the water.

Fortunately, nesting leatherbacks are protected by law in Costa Rica and projects like these help to protect leatherback eggs from poachers and dogs. You will be asked to take great care in watching this process. Once a female has begun this process, she is unlikely she will stop, but it is important to avoid changing her mind by distracting her with white light or camera flashes.

The Pacuare project was established to protect 6 kilometres of some of the most important leatherback nesting sites in Central America. Green turtles also arrive in large numbers here, but the Tortuguero National Park is best known for Green Turtles - the largest green turtle nesting site in the Western Hemisphere in fact. They start to arrive in July, which is about halfway into the period when leatherback hatchlings climb their way up through the sand and run the gauntlet of predators into the sea. Green turtle egg laying usually runs until October and hatchlings can be seen taking to the sea as late as November.

Both Pacuare and the Tortuguero National Park are fantastic locations for spotting lowland rainforest wildlife and birdlife. Puma tracks are sometimes found at Pacuare, as well as peccary and more than 265 species of bird. Howler monkeys and white fronted capuchins can be seen every day. Accommodation at each is quite different. At Pacuare, you are in a private house on location at a conservation project - comfortable, but more rustic. At Tortuguero, we provide small premium accommodation, with the smallest capacity boats for exploring the canals and rainforest.

In travelling from the Central Highlands of Costa Rica to the Caribbean, we will take you through the stunning cloud forest scenery of the Braulio Carillo National Park. In flying from the Caribbean Sea to the Pacific Ocean, you can also enjoy some tremendous aerial views of the country & seascapes either side.

Like any of our Costa Rica experiences, this one can be tailor to meet your timings, preferences and special interests. We can easily add in or swap locations to incorporate more relaxation, adventure, a higher standard of ecolodge where available or allow for a more intensive look at certain birdlife, wildlife or marine life. Other locations you may be interested to consider might include:

  • the Manuel Antonio National Park on the Central Pacific coast
  • Arenal Volcano and its cloud forest and mountain scenery
  • Talamanca Highlands cloud forest - the best area for seeing Resplendent Quetzals, Trogons & Hummingbirds

Itinerary

Sample 11-day Itinerary

This 11-day itinerary can be extended or shortened to suit your own interests. Please Contact Us to discuss.

Day 1: Arrive San José

Arrive San José, Costa Rica where you will be met and transferred privately to the Grand Hotel in the centre of San Jose, which is opposite the historic opera house and close to the city's wonderful Jade & Gold Museums.

Day 2: San Jose

Day to rest and see a bit of nearby San Jose; and buffer in case of any flight delay.

Day 3: San Jose to Pacuare

Early morning, you will be collected from your hotel and transferred from San José overland through the Braulio Carrillo National Park to the Tortuguero Canal. There is some lovely cloud forest and mountain scenery on the way.

Close to the coast you will meet a motor canoe from where you will be taken north to the Pacuare Reserve conservation project. Here you will be introduced to your accommodation and receive a briefing about all you can do whilst here. This will include the opportunity to accompany nighttime patrols to protect and observe nesting turtles.

Accommodation at on site hacienda. All meals included.

Days 4 & 5: Pacuare Reserve

Pacuare Reserve where you can decide locally how you want to balance your time accompanying night time patrols and daytime exploration of the literal rainforest. There is no charge for joining turtle protection patrols.

Days 6: Pacuare Reserve to Tortuguero National Park

From Pacuare you will be transferred privately by motor canoe halfway up the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica to the Tortuguero National Park. You will experience an accommodation update, staying now in a very good commercial lodge, with on-site spa, internet access, fitness room and pool table.

Later, you will take a guided visit to Tortuguero's picturesque town, to get a taste of the Afro-Caribbean culture and to the Sea Turtle Information Center (formerly known as the Caribbean Conservation Corporation). Sea Turtle Conservancy has worked for the conservation of endangered sea turtles in Costa Rica since 1959 (entrance is not included). Tortuguero hosts the largest green turtle (Chelonia mydas) nesting site in the Western Hemisphere and also important nesting populations of leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) and hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata) turtles. The Costa Rican legislature declared Tortuguero National Park in 1975 to protect the nesting turtles, the beach and the adjacent terrestrial habitats.

Dinner is included today and all subsequent meals whilst you are at the lodge.

If turtles are reported to be nesting, then you can pay locally to join a tour to go see (US$20 payable locally - price may be subject to change).

Day 7: Tortuguero National Park

After breakfast, you will be taken by small motor launch to explore the rainforests and waterways of the Tortuguero National Park.

After lunch, you will join guided hike to Cerro Tortuguero. Cerro Tortuguero is the only hill in this area. Although only 119m high, it is an ancient volcano.  Here you can enjoy good views over the canals and when clear, the Turrialba and Irazu volcanoes.

Day 8: Tortuguero Kayaking & Fly Caribbean to the Pacific, Osa Peninsula

At daybreak, you will be taken on private sit-on-top kayaking along the calm waters of the Tortuguero Canal. This is a great way to experience this environment; and if you paddle quietly, a great opportunity to see wildlife and birdlife.

Breakfast back at the lodge before you pack up and head by motor canoe to the mainland and on to the Tortuguero airstrip. You will then be flown to San Jose; switch planes; and then right across to the Pacific coast airstrip of Drakes Bay. Keep watch for a great scenery beneath you.

When you land in the Osa, you will be met and transferred by vehicle and boat to a lodge set into the forest within a small, sheltered bay. You will be here for 3 nights, all meals included.

Days 9 & 10: Corcovado National Park & Caño Island Biological Reserve

Visit the Corcovado National Park and the Caño Island Biological Reserve.

Day 11: Return to San José

You will be transferred overland and by water to Drake Bay airport (or Palmar Sur) and flown back to San José.  You will be met upon arrival and assisted across to San Jose International Airport.
