Palau

Tucked away in the western Pacific Ocean, Micronesia’s island nation of Palau is a diver’s bliss, renowned for its crystal-clear waters, stunning underwater landscapes, and its leading efforts in marine conservation.

It comprises over 300 islands, only 8 of which are inhabited and surrounded by turquoise lagoons, limestone karst rock formations, and healthy coral reefs. Although small, its marine ecosystem is one of the most biologically diverse in the world, attracting underwater explorers looking for both big-animal encounters and healthy reef systems. So, whether you choose one of our liveaboard adventures or a resort-based experience, you will experience some of the greatest underwater wildernesses on the planet.

Palau’s reefs are amongst the most diverse in the World, with over 500 species of coral (both hard and soft varieties) supporting more than 1,300 species of reef fish. Despite sea temperatures rising by around 0.2-0.3ºC °C per decade (according to the 2020 Pacific Islands Regional Climate Assessment), observations have identified that the coral reefs of Palau have built up a great tolerance to heat stress over time.

Palau has earned its reputation as one of the World's best areas to dive. It is well-known for its abundance and diversity of marine life, including manta rays, barracuda, turtles and a particular abundance of sharks. In 2009, Palau established the World’s first shark sanctuary, banning all commercial shark fishing within its Exclusive Economic Zone of 600,000 square kilometres. As a result, shark populations (particularly grey reef sharks and white tip reef sharks) are considered healthy and stable, especially at current-swept sites like Blue Corner, Peleliu Wall, and Ulong Channel.

Life by Liveaboard
For those looking for an adventurous and dive-focused experience, liveaboard cruises in Palau provide unmatched access to the region's most remote and famous dive sites. With up to five dives each day, including early morning and night dives, Aqua-Firma offer liveaboard experiences perfect for expert divers who want to make the most of their time underwater. Their ability to move around allows for better timing at new sites as well as spots like Blue Corner, Peleliu Wall, and the famous Manta cleaning station at German Channel. Exploring by liveaboard often means fewer crowds and a more intimate experience.

Land-based exploring
For those who prefer a slower pace experience and want to combine diving with land-based luxury, staying at a resort or hotel in Palau offers a great balance of comfort and adventure. Aqua-Firma guests enjoy world-class diving during the day and return to spacious rooms, beachfront sunsets, and on-site amenities in the evening. This option works well for couples, families, or travellers who want the freedom to mix diving with other activities, such as kayaking, snorkelling, and exploring more of Palau’s landscapes.
