Patagonia Cruises | Fjord Landscapes of Chile & Argentina

These 5-day voyages through the wilderness of Patagonia, explore some of the South America’s most remote and striking landscapes. Travelling between Punta Arenas in Chile and Ushuaia in Argentina, you will be provided with fascinating insights into the human history of the area; and wildlife you can hope to see including penguins, elephant seals, albatros, black & white Comersons dolphins and more.

In the southernmost section of this voyage, the ship will pass through the Beagle Channel and sail out to the fabled Cape Horn, weather permitting. You may also visit the even more southerly Diego Ramirez Islands. As you ply north from Wulaia Bay, the ship will navigate through a maze of islands, sailing close to glaciers, including frozen giants which guard the southern flank of the Fuegian Archipelago.

Closer encounters with the landscape will be achieved with twice-daily guided excursions in Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs or Zodiacs as they are also known). These will take you into pristine fjords, close to glaciers like Pia and Marinelli which tower over the region’s rugged Andean shores. At the Tucker Islets, you will have opportunities to see Patagonia's biggest colonies of Magellanic penguins; whilst at Wulaia Bay the RIBs can land you on remote shores for treks into native forests.

These lands were once occupied by indigenous Yámana people, famously described by Charles Darwin, James Cook and others. Whilst the Yámana have, regrettably, largely died out or been assimilated into the wider Chilean population, their fascinating history and culture will be described in detail onboard.

These daily onboard briefings and lectures will also cover topics such as glaciology, Andes geology and marine mammals of Tierra del Fuego, while an onboard library and a dedicated bilingual crew offer insights to enrich each part of your journey. Thoughtfully prepared meals inspired by local flavours and global cuisine are available between excursions, allowing time to rest whilst looking out onto some of South America’s most dramatic scenes.

Day 1: Punta Arenas

Today you will need to check in between 1pm and 5pm in Punta Arenas. Boarding will be at 6pm this evening.

DAY 2: Ainsworth Bay - Tuckers Islets

Your day will start with a picturesque navigation through the Almirantazgo Sound, towards Ainsworth Bay and the Marinelli Glacier. Here, your knowledgeable guide will explain how life began to emerge and adapt across the region as polar ice caps retreated, something that can be seen as you then voyage to the Tucker Islets, home to Magellan Penguin and Cormorant colonies. These beautiful creatures are best admired from a Zodiac boat, ideal for cruising the coast.

NOTE: In September and April this excursion is replaced with a glacier-trekking expedition in Brookes Bay.

Day 3: Pía Glacier - Glacier Alley

Today you will take a scenic trek to a viewpoint overlooking the Pia Glacier; a 20km-long block of solid ice. This will truly be one of the highlights of this journey. You will then continue on to enjoy the remarkable experience of cruising down ‘Glacier Alley’.

Day 4: Cape Horn - Wulaia Bay

You will start the day by navigating the Murray Channel and Nassau Bay, heading towards the eagerly anticipated Cape Horn National Park, known for both its remote walking trails and temperamental weather! From here, it’s on to historic Wulaia Bay where Charles Darwin visited in 1833 and native Yamana Canoeists had settled many years before.

Day 5: Ushuaia

This morning, you will arrive into Ushuaia – the capital of Tierra del Fuego and southernmost city in the world – as your Patagonian cruise draws to a close. Disembark at around 8.30am and enjoy some leisure time around Ushuaia until your onward flight.

DAY 1: Ushuaia

Today you will need to check in between 10am and 5pm in Ushuaia. Boarding will be at 6pm this evening.

Day 2: Cape Horn - Wulaia Bay

You will start your journey by navigating the Murray Channel and Nassau Bay, heading towards the eagerly anticipated Cape Horn National Park, known for both its remote walking trails and temperamental weather! From here, it’s on to historic Wulaia Bay where Charles Darwin visited in 1833 and native Yamana Canoeists had settled many years before.

Day 3: Pía Glacier - Porter Glacier

In the morning you will sail through the Northwest arm of the Beagle Channel to enter and disembark at Pía Fjord. You will take an excursion to the viewpoint from where you can see the homonymous glacier, whose main tongue extends from the top of the mountain range to the sea. During the afternoon you will enter the Garibaldi fjord, to take a walk through the cold Patagonian jungle, going up to the base of a waterfall of glacial origin.

Day 4: Agostini Sound - Águila Glacier - Cóndor Glacier

Today’s explorational tour will see you sail through the Cockburn Channel and Agostini Sound, a dramatic backdrop of imposing peaks and glaciers descending down the Darwin Mountain Range. Disembark and enjoy a quintessential Patagonian experience, first visiting a lagoon formed from the meltwaters of nearby Águila Glacier, then a Zodiac boat ride around the so-called ‘Condor Glacier’, named after the abundance of Giant Andean Condors which are known to inhabit this area. The vast landscapes explored today are some of the most memorable in all of Tierra del Fuego.

Day 5: Magdalena Island - Punta Arenas

You will disembark on Magdalena Island to discover a huge colony of Magellanic penguins.

NOTE: In September and April, this excursion is replaced by a landing on Marta Island where you can observe a colony of sea lions.
