Andes Hacienda & Horseback Riding

Ecuador's 'Avenue of Volcanoes' is one of the great geographical features of this country. Roads can take you to some of its high alto plano , but horses are far more adaptable to the extreme terrain, which is why there is a strong tradition of horse riding in Andean Ecuador.

To enjoy this tradition to the full, this highly adaptable experience will centre you at a very comfortable hacienda, where horseback riding is in the blood of the equine team.

Instead of Quito

With Quito's brand new international and domestic airport constructed about an hour out of town, it is as easy now for us to take you to our equine hacienda base instead of heading into the city. Even if you don't have time to ride, we can transfer you into the Avenue of Volcanoes and back to the airport for whatever time your next flight leaves; meanwhile enjoying vast countryside views and a traditional Andean setting away from the bustle of a city.

A Little or A lot of Riding - from Total Beginner to Advanced

If you can manage a full morning, then there's time to saddle up at least … and with two nights or more we can start to take you horseback trekking amongst haciendas, farmlands and further afield towards places like Corazon Volcano. If you have longer still, then you can consider one of our longer rides to Cotopaxi volcano, the Cloud Forest or Quilotoa Lake.

The horses we use are from mixed Criollo (native South American), English thoroughbred and Arabian stock, resulting in a near perfect combination of toughness, agility, calm temperament and 'mountain sense'. Beginners and experienced riders alike have found them easy to ride, willing and good mannered. If you have previous riding experience you will be given plenty of opportunity to canter.

Complete beginners are as welcome as experienced riders, with riding lessons available and included for almost any age. These are conducted within a large and secure training pen.

À La Carte Day Riding

For as long as you choose to stay at the hacienda, you will be able to agree day rides providing up to 5 hours riding. This can take you along small roads and tracks through farmlands; along paths through more developed vegetation; and onto higher grasslands with open views to volcanoes such as Cotopaxi and Corazon.

Longer Rides

Our longer rides need to be arranged in advance with a minimum of 2 people. The key locations these can include, either in isolation or in combination with two or all three of them are:

  • Cloud Forest
  • Cotopaxi Volcano trek
  • Lake Quilotoa Direct or Andean Loop

Please Contact Us for further information, including your favoured dates so that we can see how the team can work around your preferred timings and locations.
