Observing wildlife in the depths of a tropical rainforest is an incredibly rewarding pursuit, yet the immense height of the trees often leaves the most vibrant activity hidden high above the ground. In joining our Panama Canal experience, you be stationed within the treetops themselves, in the form of a radar tower converted into a lodge brimming with rainforest expertise.
An Immersive Experience in the Rainforest Canopy
Panama is a true crossroads of biodiversity, harbouring nearly 1,000 species of bird in an area only slightly larger than Scotland. To take advantage of this abundance, this experience centres around a lodge which rises 50 feet above the forest floor for 360° views of the surrounding forest. At this height, you are brought eye to eye with the region’s wildlife.
Typically elusive mammals like mantled howler monkeys, two-toed sloths, and Geoffroy’s tamarins can be spotted more easily from this elevation as they browse the trees for food. Meanwhile, small feeding flocks of vibrant honeycreepers, tanagers and euphonias forage in the cecropia trees just feet away.
Below the observation deck, the dining room and your comfortable treetop bedrooms feature large, unscreened windows, allowing you to spot green iguanas, birds and mammals, before you even step outside.
Nectar feeders surrounding the lodge's base attract a dizzying array of hummingbirds, including the white-necked jacobin and rufous-tailed hummingbird, providing brilliant opportunities for wildlife photographers.
World Class Wildlife on Pipeline Road
While the lodge itself is a haven, we will also venture out into the surrounding habitats using specialised open-air safari vehicles. A cornerstone of this itinerary is a visit to the nearby Pipeline Road.
Carved into the forest during World War II, this unimproved track is internationally renowned among ornithologists and nature enthusiasts. White-faced capuchin monkeys, northern tamanduas (anteaters), and coatis are frequently encountered.
More than 450 species of birds have been recorded along this single road. Walking quietly beneath the towering mahogany and kapok trees, we will seek out elusive understory dwellers such as the black-crowned antpitta, the lance-tailed manakin, and the spectacularly colourful broad-billed motmot.
Support Local Conservation
By participating in this experience, you are directly supporting the ongoing protection of Soberanía National Park's delicate ecosystems, ensuring that this vital biological corridor remains intact for future generations.
Whether you are a nature enthusiast wanting to experience the rainforest from a completely new perspective or a lifelong birder seeking specific neotropical endemics, this experience provides an unmatched level of comfort, expertise, and immersion.

Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Panama & Canopy-Level Orientation
Upon arrival at the airport, you will be met by our team and transferred to Semaphore Hill in the dense neotropical rainforest of Soberanía National Park. Following an orientation and time to settle in, the late afternoon is best spent on the lodge’s renowned Observation Deck. This platform provides an eye-level perspective of the rainforest canopy and sweeping views across to the Panama Canal. Your first day concludes with dinner at the lodge.
Day 2: Semaphore Hill Road & Gamboa Aquatic Habitats
The day begins with early morning observation from the upper deck, accompanied by freshly brewed coffee, to witness the canopy awaken. Mid-morning, your guide will lead a descent down Semaphore Hill Road. This winding, shaded route transitions through varied elevations, offering excellent visibility into both the forest interior and vibrant edge habitats. Following lunch at the tower, the afternoon is dedicated to exploring the Ammo Dump Ponds near the town of Gamboa. This unique wetland area provides a stark, rewarding contrast to the morning's dense forest environments.
Day 3: Pipeline Road Entrance & Summit Botanical Gardens
After breakfast, we board an open-air safari vehicle and head to the entrance of Pipeline Road – internationally recognized as one of the premier destinations for Central American birdwatching and rainforest ecology. The morning focuses on the rich biodiversity found at the beginning of this historic track. In the afternoon, we visit the Summit Botanical Gardens, a centre for tropical flora conservation, and explore an educational exhibit tracing the deep cultural and ecological history of Panama’s national bird.
Day 4: Plantation Trail & Riparian Forest Edges
A short ride brings us to the base of Semaphore Hill to explore the Plantation Trail. This gentle, accessible path winds through mature, primary rainforest and follows the Rio Chico Masambi, showcasing a distinct understory ecosystem. After lunch, we travel to a picturesque local lodge in Gamboa to observe bustling wildlife feeding stations set against the backdrop of Cerro Pelado. The afternoon concludes with an exploration of the riparian zones along the Chagres River, the primary tributary feeding the Panama Canal.
Day 5: Full Day Expedition along Pipeline Road
Today is entirely dedicated to a deep exploration of the world-famous Pipeline Road. By venturing further along the track and crossing multiple river systems, we maximize our exposure to deep-forest microhabitats and undisturbed wilderness. To ensure continuous observation without breaking our momentum, a picnic lunch is provided in the field. We will spend the afternoon slowly navigating our way back, actively monitoring the undergrowth and mid-canopy before returning to the lodge for dinner.
Day 6: Old Gamboa Road & Indigenous Forest Trails
The morning focuses on the diverse transitional habitats of the Canal Zone. We will explore the environments surrounding the Summit Ponds before continuing onto Old Gamboa Road, a varied track celebrated by naturalists for its diverse ecological niches. In the afternoon, we return to the northern stretches of the Chagres River and the Gamboa grounds, walking along historic, shaded paths, including trails traditionally utilized by the indigenous Embera community.
Day 7: Panamá Rainforest Discovery Centre & Panama Canal
Following breakfast, we depart for the Panamá Rainforest Discovery Centre, a pioneering ecotourism and environmental education facility bordering Soberanía National Park. The highlight of the morning is ascending a 100-foot-tall observation tower, which features platforms at distinct structural layers of the forest, culminating in sweeping panoramic views. We will also walk a well-maintained trail circuit that borders a vibrant forest pond. The afternoon offers flexible options: relax at the lodge or take an optional excursion to the Miraflores Locks Museum to witness the monumental engineering of the Panama Canal in action.
Day 8: Final Canopy Views & Departure
Depending on your flight schedule, the morning offers one final opportunity to enjoy the sweeping views from the Observation Deck. You will then be transferred to the airport for your onward journey, concluding your immersive Panamanian rainforest experience.
