This experience begins in the large city of Bariloche, situated at the foothills of the Andes and southern shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake within the Nahuel Huapi National Park. Bariloche is rich in history, which has helped to shape the city’s present-day culture and cuisine. It is well known for being Argentina’s Chocolate Capital, after World War II saw an influx of European migrants and introduced traditional European chocolate-making techniques to the area.
From this unique city, you will be transferred to a remote estancia in Argentina’s Lake District, where you will begin your horseback riding experience from lakeside stables at the foot of Mount Catedral. The estancia is situated in Northern Patagonia, where rides have easy access to the forests, creeks and waterfalls of the Nahuel National Park.
Your estancia has a maximum capacity of 28 guests, which means that you can expect a personalised experience and a welcoming atmosphere. The accommodation is divided amongst 2 houses and 3 private villas, decorated in a rustic yet elegant style, offering superb views. Chefs serve both regional and international cuisine, focusing on balanced and healthy meals utilising home-grown produce and local ingredients.
Horse riding here is limited to just 7 guests per outing, with rides varying from the flat valley terrain to more mountainous slopes and forest. Each guest will be paired with a horse most suited to them and rides will set off in different directions, with routes providing for the rider’s level of expertise. You can expect a high standard of equine knowledge, with some of the best trainers in the area.
Horses roam freely around the estancia, so guests can not only enjoy the riding experience, but get to know the different characters of the stable. On warm summer days it’s even possible to go riding and swimming with them in the lake.
Out of the saddle, there are plenty of other activities to keep you busy during your stay. The calm and sheltered waters of the bay make way for good kayaking and boat rides; meanwhile there are a number of interesting trails for self-navigated or guided treks. This is also a fantastic area for bird watching, with opportunities to see Andean Condors, Chimango Caracaras, Magellanic Woodpeckers and Austral Parakeets. Other activities on this holiday can include yoga, massage and fly-fishing tours; and in winter, snowshoe walking and skiing.
Each full day you are at the estancia, you will be able to participate in whatever combination of horseback riding, stand up paddle boarding, lake kayaking and trekking you want. Day 1: Arrive Bariloche
Arrive into Bariloche airport where you will be met and transfer privately to a hotel in the centre of the chocolate box centre of the town. Bariloche is a lakeside city with a town centre whose wood and rock architecture feels like a cross between Austria and Cornwall in England. There is no lack of restaurants and pubs to choose between.
Day 2: Half Day Short Circuit Excursion
Your day begins in the city centre, visiting the civic centre, the Cathedral and the main commercial streets, where regional craft shops and famous chocolate shops stand out. Afterwards, you will set off along Bustillo Avenue, skirting Lake Nahuel Huapi. You will stop at the foot of Cerro Campanario to ascend by chairlift to its summit and enjoy a panoramic view of the city, the deep blue lake, the evergreen forests, and the mountains with their snow-capped peaks.
You will continue along Bustillo Avenue, reaching the Llao Llao Peninsula, where the legendary Llao Llao Hotel is located, along with the picturesque San Eduardo Chapel and Puerto Pañuelo, the departure point for lake excursions. You will then head to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Lake Moreno to be amazed by the natural beauty of the landscape.
You will be transferred back to your hotel after the trip.
