Denis Island boasts some of the best diving and game fishing of the Seychelles archipelago. Arguably one of the best diving locations in the Seychelles, the protected waters and reefs that surround Denis offer year-round diving opportunities.
The peak time for diving here is from October to April, when the waters are calm and clear. The island's enthusiastic dive instructor Ted generally takes groups of up to 9 divers out on the dive boat for two morning dives and one afternoon dive to a choice of 9 coral dive sites around the island. Each dive site is located on a gradual drop off 5 - 35 metres into the ocean depths. Diving equipment can be hired, while snorkelling gear is provided free of charge from the PADI Dive Centre on site. From the age of 10, children and adults can enrol in dive courses and partake in diving excursions - and what better place to learn! Kayaks are also available free of charge for guests use from the Dive centre.
Such marine life that one can expect to see in the waters surrounding Denis include marlin, sailfish, barracuda, wahoo, dorado and tuna. White tip and other reef sharks, whales and dolphins are also a frequent sighting in these waters. Between the months of September and November, whale sharks and manta rays can sometimes be encountered here.
Denis presents some marvellous snorkelling opportunities, with chances to encounter some spectacular marine life as well as incredible underwater landscapes. Snorkellers will be overwhelmed by the spectacular colours - bright yellows and blues, as huge shoals of fish are swept along in the currents. The island lagoon harbours such fascinating species as triggerfish, clownfish, parrotfish, unicorn fish and rays. Snorkellers can also expect to see reef sharks and turtles. The eastern side of the island is fringed by solid reef and the best snorkelling here can be done at high tide, whereas the western side of the island is best snorkelled at low tide.
For fishing enthusiasts, Denis Island provides daily charters to a nearby fishing bank with experienced crews and all necessary fishing equipment. The resident fisherman has lived on the island for over a decade and knows the waters like the back of his hand, ensuring that guests will have the best possible fishing experience. During morning excursions, guests can fish for their supper, taking their catch back to the Chef to conjure up a delightful recipe. Afternoon excursions involve big game fishing, although any large fish caught are released back into the sea.
