Sailing in Greenland

There is no better way to explore the magnificent West coast of Greenland than onboard a beautiful 168ft three masted schooner, providing a tranquil and unobtrusive platform for exploration alongside just 34 guests.  During May and June each year our Disko Island Bowhead Whale Safaris offer truly first class opportunities for observing the rare Bowhead Whales, which is also known as the Greenland Right Whale. We often see these wonderful animals in impressive numbers along with humpbacks, seals, Arctic fox, Arctic hare and the abundant breeding birdlife of this remote region.

Onboard you are invited to relax or actively indulge in the Arctic sailing experience, cruising amid an endless panorama of exquisitely carved icebergs with a full 24 hours of sunlight and seemingly endless hours for observation. Enjoy spacious decks or the comfortable saloon; share your memories of the day at the cosy bar; or help the crew hoist the sails - the choice is yours. All cabins on this handsome vessel are ensuite and being stable, bright and spacious, she is much loved by those who sail aboard.

In late Summer and Autumn we explore further north and south with chances to experience other wildlife such as musk oxen, visit colourful Inuit communities and gain an insight into Viking history and Greenlandic culture. In September and October we often experience spectacular Northern Lights displays under sail.

Daily guided programme

Expert natural history guidance is an essential ingredient for sailing in Greenland and guides share their knowledge both on land and through a series of onboard lectures and discussions. You are likely to spend plenty of time on the deck of the ship, from where you are likely to gain the best views and chances of spotting whales. Bowheads have been hunted within the living memories of some, so they and are wary of boat approach. Experience has taught us how to respect their shyness but still experience memorable encounters.

During all Greenland voyages, you will make regular landings by zodiac for hikes and explore glaciers, tundra and historic sites on foot. Safety is key in the Realm of the Polar Bear, so groups necessarily need to stick close to their armed guide whenever on land.
