Momela Lakes

In the Northeast of the Arusha National Park are the rich alkaline lakes of Momela. These lakes provide excellent birdwatching with Greater and Lesser Flamingos often taking up residence here in their thousands (the flamingos' presence can be difficult to predict and varies from year to year). Pelicans, Sacred Ibises, Yellow Billed Storks, Egyptian Geese are regularly spotted. The lakes are also great for Colobus and Blue Monkeys in the surrounding dense forest. Hippos are constant residents and Elephants and Buffaloes often put in an appearance.

The 3-4 day climb up Mount Meru, Tanzania's 2nd highest peak, is in many ways more rewarding than Kilimanjaro, with the summit hike around the truly remarkable Meru Crater being a real highlight. In terms of wildlife, the hike up Mt Meru can be very good as well, with better chances of encountering large mammals than on Kilimanjaro (such as buffalo, elephants and warthogs) giving the trek and additional element of excitement. In addition to Mt Meru itself the Momela Lakes in the Parks North East and Ngurdoto Crater in the South East provide wildlife viewing in a rich mixture of forest, open savannah and wetlands.

Our half day Momela Kayaking trips combine well with a half day of private vehicle safari in the wider Arusha National Park.
