Island Hopping Yacht Safaris
Seychelles
2026 & 2027
Cousin is a haven for birders, attracting some 250,000 nesting birds each year. Among Cousin's colourful bird populations are the Seychelles sunbird, red turtle dove and moor hens. The island also has sizeable populations of seabirds, including bridled and fairy terns (one of the symbols of the Seychelles), brown and lesser noddies, frigate birds and Audubon's shearwaters.
The island is considered to be the most important breeding site for hawksbill turtles in the Western Indian Ocean. Up to 100 turtles are reported to come ashore to nest each year, which is remarkably more often than not done in broad daylight.
Other reptile populations to be found on Cousin include the Aldabra giant tortoise and four endemic skinks (Seychelles, Wright, bronze gecko and the burrowing skink). The island is also home to an endemic green gecko, contributing to Cousin having one of the highest lizard densities per hectare on the planet.
Cousin is also home to a whole host of smaller invertebrates, including crabs, spiders, millipedes and termites. No matter what time of year Cousin is visited, there is always an abundance of opportunities to encounter its fascinating wildlife.
