The Special Reserve area not only covers the land, but also the surrounding marine area up to 400 km offshore.  Research has shown that the waters of the Special Island Reserve contain larger quantities of fish than any other marine protected areas in the archipelago. 

Unfortunately, Cousin did not escape the effects of the recent coral bleaching at the end of the 1990s.  However, much research is now being undertaken in order to more fully understand the impacts of bleaching and what the favourable recovery methods might be.
