Prior to 1973, when the island was purchased by Christopher Cadbury (now known as the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts), many endemic land and sea birds had been completely wiped out.  Fortunately, due to extensive conservation efforts, their populations are now thriving.

Aside from its impressive bird populations, Aride is also home to a rich diversity of reptiles, including three species of snake (all of which are harmless), three species of skink (a type of lizard) and three species of gecko (also a type of lizard).  Of particular interest is the fact that, despite its small size, Aride has one of the densest populations of lizards in the world.

Aride consists almost entirely of native woodland, the protection of which is considered to be of utmost importance.  It is home to some completely unique species of plant, including the endemic Wright's gardenia and a species of 'peponium' (from the cucumber family) that is also considered to be endemic to the island.

Aride is a favourite breeding site for the lesser noddy and as such the world's largest colony can be found here.  Furthermore, the island is also home to the world's largest colony of Audubon's shearwaters and what is considered to be the world's largest colony of white-tailed tropicbirds.

Brown noddies, fairy terns and wedge-tailed shearwaters can also been found in abundance on Aride.
