Los Cabos: A Guide to Visiting Southern Baja Mexico

Southern Baja Mexico is the disembarkation point for our Baja California Whale Watching Voyages and the base for our dive liveaboard voyages to the magnificent Revillagidedo Archipelago - usually referred to as Socorro, which is one of the islands within the group. For whale watchers and divers who have a little extra time to experience the Southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula (Los Cabos), the area provides an a rich palette of options which we can arrange for you. These include the towns of Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo and Todos Santos.

For those with a week to spare and seeking a special wilderness and wildlife experience in the Sea of Cortez, we offer sea kayaking expeditions around the uninhabited Espirtu Santo island. This is an area rich in marine life with chances to snorkel with inquisitive sealions and mobula rays; and with luck view some the diverse whale and dolphin species that migrate through the surrounding waters. Kayaking conditions are generally relatively undemanding and can be tailored to your level of experience.

Los Cabos offers long stretches of beautiful beaches, perfect for a few days of post dive relaxation. For those looking for a little post adventure decadence, Aqua-Firma can arrange accommodation and transportation to Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo; or a stay in the little developed and spectacular Pacific coastline around the elegant colonial town of Todos Santos - a perfect 'get away from it all' experience.

Away from the coastline that oscillates between towering cliffs and long stretches of sand, the landscape rises dramatically to the high mountain Sierra de la Laguna. It's highest peak of Picacho La Laguna at 2163m and others in this picturesque range are visible from both the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean.

San Jose del Cabo

The largest town south of La Paz on the Baja Peninsula, San Jose del Cabo is a fun and popular holiday town and port. The town still retains its traditional colonial style of cool plazas, narrow streets and traditional Spanish style buildings - this in spite of extensive hotel and resort development along stretches of seafront. Many excellent beaches are easily reachable and a wide range of activities can be arranged locally. Within the town Aqua-Firma uses a lovely, colonial style hotel.

Cabo San Lucas

A former fishing village and quickly growing resort town of Cabo San Lucas possesses a spectacular location and southern most tip of the Baja Peninsula. It is the meeting point (Gulf Point) of the Gulf of California and Pacific Ocean. Sandy coves close to town offer views of sealion colonies on rocky islets just off the coast. On the very tip of the peninsula is El Arco, a huge natural rocky arch best seen from the water. Pelican Rock, a rocky shard at the entrance to harbour is also a popular spot for marine life. These and many other activities can be arranged locally. Aqua-Firma can arrange accommodation at a convenient marina side hotel and transport in this area. Cabo is a fun and easy going holiday town with good facilities, but perhaps not as authentically 'Mexican' as other towns in the region.

Todos Santos

Heading north-west up the craggy and mountain backed Pacific Coast of Cabo, development fades rapidly to be replaced by miles of beautiful and undeveloped beaches and the sound of crashing surf. The slopes of the Sierra de la Laguna are cloaked in stands of pine and oak. A cactus covered plain leads to attractive colonial mission town of Todos Santos - a quiet retreat and favoured surfing destination. Aqua-Firma can arrange stays in a boutique hotel lovingly restored from historic colonial residences in this area. The building was the former residence of the town's 19th Century sugar baron.

This is great spot to relax and unwind in an area rich in natural beauty. For those keen on surfing, we offer surf lessons provided by an experienced surfing instructor.

La Paz - Isla Espiritu Santo

For travellers and divers with an extra week to spare and a craving for more unique experiences and activities, Aqua-Firma can offer kayaking, snorkelling and diving around Espiritu Santo Island, north of La Paz. This island, a magnet for marine life, is a wonderful location to explore by kayak with a diverse coastline, punctuated with sheltered bays and beaches. These islands in the Sea of Cortez are considered one of the world's top locations for sea kayaking. Colonies of sealions are resident on the island, while frigate birds and pelicans sour overhead. With no permanent human residents nights are spent in rustic but comfortable eco-camps underneath a halo of stars.
