Hiking in Iceland

When you think of Iceland, the first thought that is likely to come to mind is the volcanic activity that occurs there and the sheer abundance of glaciers, mountains, volcanoes, hot springs and geysers that it possesses.  Such geological features make for some very interesting hiking and trekking trips, trips that you are unlikely to replicate anywhere else in the world.

The continuous bubbling of hot springs is quite an extraordinary sight, no more so than in the Geysir area, where the Strokkur Geyser produces an impressive column of boiling water every 15 minutes.  In the valley of Rekjadalur, you can witness hot water rushing down the slopes of the Hellisheiði mountain range and hike amidst an abundance of geothermal springs, gurgling melting pots and super heated pools of water.

With 11% of Iceland covered in glaciers, their magnificence and vastness is somewhat incomprehensible until you see them for yourself.  The size and appearance of Iceland's glaciers are under constant change, sometimes growing (in cold weather) and sometimes shrinking, which has been the case more and more over the last few years as temperatures have increased.  In many areas of Iceland, glaciers are pure white, while in the more volcanic parts, the tongues can often be completely black or a layered effect of black and white.

In some areas of Iceland, where the glaciers have retreated, beautiful lakes have formed, which are often studded with glistening icebergs, the most spectacular being the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, situated in the south east of the country in the biggest National Park in Europe of Vatnajökull.  Vatnajökull National Park makes up around 13% of Iceland, where the natural elements of rivers, glacial ice and volcanic and geothermal activity have combined to produce the wonderful landscapes and features that can be observed here. The Vatnajökull glacier itself generally measures between 400-600 metres in thickness (950 metres at its thickest), rising around 2000 metres above sea level, with its lowest 300 metres below sea level.

The innumerable waterfalls of Iceland provide a worthwhile excursion in many of our hiking trips, particularly those of Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss.  Gullfoss is in fact two separate waterfalls, where an average of 130 cubic metres of water gushes per second during the summer months - an extraordinary sight to witness.  The 60 metre high Skógafoss waterfall, where legend has it treasure is buried beneath the falls boasts superb surroundings of breathtaking snow capped glacier heights.  Godafoss (waterfall of the Gods) is a particuarly incredible site, where a glacial torrent pours over a 40 foot ledge.  Meanwhile, Seljalandsfoss is a waterfall worth witnessing and you can walk right behind its cascading veil.

You can't visit Iceland without ascending at least one volcano or mountain, not least because the views upon reaching the top are breathtaking.  Helka, possibly Iceland's most famous active volcano, a worthwhile hike which provides an insight interesting historic past, evidence of recent volcanic activity and stunning views of Fjallabak Mountains and Vatnajökull glacier.  Meanwhile, Snæfellsjökull, arguably Iceland's most picturesque mountain, offers an interesting and adventurous glacier hike to the volcano summit and over the years has inspired numerous literary creations, including Jules Verne's novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

Alternatively, for a longer hiking experience, we can take you on five day hike in East Iceland, which encompasses exploring the awe-inspiring fjords, deserted inlets, colossal colourful mountains and steaming lava fields of Borgarfjörður and it's relatively untouched and picturesque surrounding landscapes.

Our hiking trips range from leisurely half day trips to adventurous and more challenging whole day or multi-day experiences.  For those who wish to combine hiking with alternative forms of exploration, we also offer combination options which include boat rides and jeep safaris, kayaking and mountain biking, giving you the chance to discover the varying landscapes in different ways.
