Seychelles Blue Pigeon (Alectroenas pulcherrima)

Length:  24cm / 9.4 inches
Wingspan:  40cm / 16 inches

Introduction
The Seychelles blue pigeon is a relatively common endemic resident of the Seychelles archipelago, which often frequent wooded habitats on all but Bird and the smaller islands.

Identification
Seychelles blue pigeons have very distinct striking dark blue plumage with contrasting grey breast and bright red fore-crown.  Adults are typically dark blue all over with short, square ended tails, yellowish bills and grey feet and legs.  Contrastingly, recently fledged birds are predominantly pale grey with grey head and wings with golden fringes to the mantle, rump and tail.

Voice
The song of the Seychelles blue pigeon comprises a series of harsh notes which accelerate then eventually trail off in volume.  Aside from this gruff sounding singing, the Seychelles blue pigeon is usually silent.

Behaviour
Males can often be seen chasing each other in rapid flight displays and performing fascinating fighting rituals.  Generally these pigeons are solitary and unconstructive birds, although they can sometimes be witnessed congregating in favourite fruit trees.
