Following the collapse of the copra industry and subsequent sale of the island plantation in 1970, North became overgrown with a number of alien plant species and populated by an overwhelming amount of feral species, such as goats, pigs cats and rats.  After a very extensive eradication programme, all vermin animals were successfully removed from the island, giving way to a bright future for North's endangered and endemic species.

A large area of land was soon cleared to make way for the construction of North Island Lodge - the island's only accommodation.  A number of impressive indigenous plant nurseries were also established and over one hundred thousand plants of 73 species were successfully grown from seed.

Hawksbill turtles have since become regular visitors to the island, producing successful hatchlings year on year.  North Island is also part of a turtle monitoring and programme, which is run in collaboration with others in the Seychelles.

Tropic birds have also been seen returning to nest, as well as kestrels and sunbirds, which have also been sighted.
