Floreana (or Charles) Mockingbird (Nesomimus trifasciatus)

Conservation StatusEndangered
Length:  28 cm

Introduction

T
he Floreana mockingbird is a very rare species, with an estimated population of around 150 birds.  They are confined to the islets of Champion-by-Floreana and Gardner-by-Floreana.  Unfortunately, very little is known about the breeding biology of the Floreana mockingbird, however, it is known that they tend to favour nesting on the prickly pear cacti.

Identification

The Floreana species is very similar in appearance to that of the Galapagos mockingbird, but has a slightly longer bill, extensive dark smudging on the flanks of their plumage and less streaking patterns on their upper parts.  They also lack the dark ear-coverts and white collar of the Galapagos mockingbird and have red-brown irises.

Voice

The Floreana mockingbird has a rather loud and melodious voice, though can be quite variable.
