Mahé is home to an extraordinary array of wildlife, including rare endemic plants that can be found nowhere else in the world.  The island's mist forests and mountain strongholds are inhabited by some particularly fascinating species, namely the Jellyfish Tree, the carnivorous Seychelles Pitcher Plant and the Seychelles Vanilla orchid.

A particular area of interest on Mahé is Morne Seychellois Park, a nature reserve which was originally established back in 1979.  The park covers more than 20% of the total land area on Mahé and consists of an extensive network of different nature trails, covering some 15 km.  There are 12 different nature trails in total, all of which can be explored by either a half or full day excursion.

One of the Seychelles' oldest National Monuments, dating back to more than a century is that of the National Botanical Gardens - five acres of beautifully landscaped and well maintained tropical gardens.  Situated in Mont Fleuri, on the outskirts of Victoria, the Botanical Gardens harbour a diverse collection of exotic and endemic plant species. If you do not have time in your schedule to visit Praslin's Vallee De Mai then this is your other opportunity to see the Coco de Mer with the World largest Nut.  Other  plant species that can be found in the gardens include an array of palms and a wide variety of spice and fruit trees, the majority of which are endemic to this garden.  Further residents include the population of Aldabra tortoises, some of which are over 150 years old, and colonies of fruit bats which can be seen feeding and roosting in overhead trees.  A recent addition to the Botanical Gardens is that of an orchid house, displaying a wonderful collection of brightly coloured orchids, including some species endemic to the archipelago.

For those who desire a more natural history focused trek, Glacis Trois Freres is the ideal choice, although some areas do require greater caution.  It is a relatively easy trail and does not take a great deal of time to complete.  The trail has an altitude of 300 metres, and upon reaching the top, hikers are rewarded with spectacular views over Victoria, the Ste Anne Marine Park and the neighbouring islands of Praslin and La Digue.  Something to look toward to top of the trail is the Seychelles Pitcher plant: a separate path marked by a wooden sign directs trekkers to their growing area.
