Dog sledding year round activity and mode of transport in Spitsbergen (Svalbard). In midsummer as the snow disappears, wheels replace runners on the dog sleds and dirt tracks reemerge from beneath the ice.
This day trip experience enables you to experience the Arctic wilderness leading your own team of Alaskan huskies. Your day begins in a vehicle which will take you some 12km outside of the town of Longyearbyen. Here at the end of the road you will meet your team of dogs and receive expert instruction in the principles of 'mushing' a team of dogs. Once initiated, you will be released into the Arctic tundra of the Adventdalen Valley, mountains surrounding you and your team of dogs racing before you. In summer, this area is home to large numbers of birds and wildlife, of which you are most likely to see reindeer. Twenty four hour sunlight sets the tundra in full bloom at this time, with flowers turning the barren ground. This experience is a wonderful first introduction to the Arctic. At some stage it will be time to head home. Upon arrival back at the Trapping Station you will unharness the dogs and get the chance to have a play with your new companions. Hot drinks and warm cakes will be served, baked in true trapper style on the wood burning oven in the cabin. Before you are taken back to town, you will then have the opportunity to explore more of the Trapping Station.
