| Arctic Hiking & Sea Kayaking Day Trip Adventure | ||

This one day combined trekking and sea kayaking trip is an energetic and adventurous way to compliment one of our Arctic Wildlife Voyages. The aim is to kayak and then trek to the peak of Hjortfjellet: a spectacular mountain which towers 1000 metres above Adventfjorden in central Spitsbergen. The climb is a challenge taking you over some rough terrain, but the feeling of accomplishment upon reaching an Arctic peak is highly rewarding, providing wide open views towards Isfjorden and the Nordenskiöld Land National Park.
You will begin your day with a drive to Sjøområdet where you will be introduced to the principles of safe polar sea kayaking and the equipment you will be using by your local expert guide. No previous kayaking experience is needed and all essential equipment will be provided including life jackets and dry suits. You will then set off, accompanied throughout by your guide, who will help you with your kayaking techniques. You will also be on the lookout for wildlife whilst learning about Arctic natural history as you go. At the end of your kayaking, you will don trekking boots and begin your journey from sea level to the summit of Hjortfjellet. En route you can expect to encounter a sea eagle nest and relics of abandoned mining stations. The view upon reaching the summit embraces miles of untouched Arctic nature a just reward for your intrepid climb. Please Note: Kayaking can cause some aching to the arms and shoulders, so we recommend that only people in fit physical shape partake in the trip. |
