North Spitsbergen Wildlife Voyages & Expedition Cruises This early season exploration of Spitsbergen has the potential to fulfill all one could hope for from a high Arctic journey. The mountainous landscapes of Spitsbergen are now steeped in snow, the air carries a distinct chill and the first hints of spring bring an enormous amount of wildlife activity. More than 2000 polar bears live on this archipelago and now mothers and their polar bear cubs begin searching for food in earnest on the ice after a long dark winter.
Arctic foxes begin to change from their white winter coats to a mottled black and reindeers amble by, inquisitive of new visitors. The emerging spring is stunning - still waters reflect calving ice fronts and plenty of floating and fast ice remains along the coast. In the north of Spitsbergen the Arctic silence is broken by bustling walrus colonies, providing excellent photographic opportunities. The sea bird cliffs are alive with thousands of migrant birds who have travelled here to feed on rich waters and breed. Guillemots, Arctic terns, eider ducks, glaucous gulls, little auks and resident ptarmigans are amongst the many species you may observe in high numbers.
Our memorable natural history voyages are onboard the smallest ships and provide an inspiring environment for small groups of likeminded people. We aim to spend as much time as possible ashore and cruising coasts and fjords in small rigid inflatable boats. Your day may also include snow shoe trekking, kayaking, photographic workshops or even camping onshore depending on your interests. Throughout the day you will be accompanied by an expert guide, whilst in the evenings a programme of onboard natural history talks will bring to life all that you are seeing by day. This North Spitsbergen Voyage provides access to some outstanding glacial scenery including the impressive Monaco Glacier in Liefdefjorden. Our aim is to reach the Hinlopen Strait and the island of Nordaustlandet, the most northerly of the major Spitsbergen islands. Ringed at times by high mountains and shimmering glaciers, these northern bays and fjords offer outstanding and memorable Arctic scenery. The expedition hopes to reach 81 degrees north - just 540 mile south of the geographic north pole. * * * Whilst all of our North Spitsbergen Voyages are Arctic wilderness adventures with a strong focus on natural history, geology, scenery and polar history, some come equipped with specialist guidance and equipment to cater for more developed interests in activities such as sea kayaking, scuba diving, longer trekking, snow shoe walking, birdwatching and photography. If you have a particular interest in any of these areas then please call one of our polar experts and polar guides on +44 (0)1428 620012 or UK 0844 412 0848 (local rates) to discuss the ideal departure for you. Equipment and safety on our Arctic voyages are of the highest standard and comply with strict IATTO codes of conduct. As an ATOL bonded travel company, Aqua-Firma can arrange international flights, hotels, extended stays in Oslo and additional day trips in Spitsbergen before or after your voyage. These include sea kayaking, trekking, learning to dog sled on wheels and fossil hunting. Photography Workshops Andy will be joined on this voyage by polar marine expert and former Scientific Diving Supervisor for the British Antarctic Survey, Kelvin Murray, who will further be able to assist with interpretation of the Marine Life of Spitsbergen. Those who joined this voyage in June 2011 were lucky enough to see 5 species of whales, including blue whales, fin, minke, humpback and beluga whales. This is in addition to a dozen polar bears, walruses, Arctic foxes, ptarmigan, reindeer, ivory gulls and thousands of migratory seabirds.
