Oban, Faroes & Jan Mayen to Spitsbergen

This voyage to the Arctic and ‘sub Arctic’ is often one of the best for seeing a combination of marine life, birdlife and dramatic isolated islands.  Travelling first to the west coast of Scotland to join the vessel in Oban we head up to St Kilda, the island waters provide plenty of opportunity for seeing dolphins, whales and other sea mammals from the boat.

Out into the North Atlantic, you will have the opportunity to see birds in the open ocean and explore the dramatic isolated coastlines of islands rich in seabird colonies and a fascinating cultural history. These include The Faroes with its Viking heritage and dramatic sea cliff.  Jan Mayen s one of the most enchanting and little visited, with its volcanic peak and impressive glaciers spilling into the sea.

Our final destination is Spitsbergen.  Here you will be able to explore the spectacular fjords and bays of South Spitsbergen such as Hornsund and Bellsund with the jagged mountain ranges clearly showing where the name Spitsbergen came from.  There are some impressive coastal seabird colonies in this area which you will be able to see including the clown of the birds, the puffin. We will also keep a sharp eye out for the Arctic mammals including reindeer, Arctic foxes and of course the symbol of the Arctic itself: the polar bear.
