The Weddell Sea
The Weddell Sea is a remote and wild region, lying to the east of the Antarctic Peninsula. Together, the Antarctic Peninsula & Weddell Sea make up the most diverse and productive Antarctic marine ecosystem. It was here that Shackleton's ship Endurance was trapped and crushed by the ice in 1915. Further back in Geological time, it is believed that this is the place where Gondwanaland began to break up to form the continents of the Earth we know today.
This stunningly beautiful area remains locked in ice throughout the cold Antarctic Winter. The sea ice retreats in summer leaving behind magnificent tabular icebergs, many stretching for several miles. The Weddell Sea abounds with plentiful wildlife: most significantly it is the realm of the Emperor Penguin, who early in the Antarctic Summer, make their way from the edge of the ice into open water. It supports a rich marine ecosystem, where vast quantities of krill provide food for abundant and diverse populations of fish and marine mammals. It is the presence of the krill in the sea that supports the thriving colonies of penguins who lay their eggs and raise their young on the Antarctic Peninsula. Such species include adelie, gentoo, emperor and chinstrap penguins, Weddell seals, crabeater seals, humpback whales, southern right whales, minke whales and hourglass dolphin.

Antarctic Peninsula
The Antarctic Peninsula is scenically the most dramatic region and provides the greatest diversity of wildlife. It has a beautiful and rugged coastline formed of mountains which are connected to the South American Andes. Peaks rise as high as 3,000 metres from the sea.
Marine life is no less bountiful here than the Weddell Sea and on previous voyages here guests have enjoyed the company if more than 200 whales around the ship at one time. Seals can be found in large numbers on the Peninsula, of which the largest seal is the Leopard Seal. This grows up to 3.2 metres in length and after the Orca, ranks as top predator on the continent. Your guides will be trying to spot these seals as they float in wait, close to a penguin colony diving in point. We are sometimes able to see them tossing an unfortunate penguin into the air.
King Penguins of the Falklands
We have an additional departure from 20th Nov - 3rd Dec, 2011 in which we will combine the Antarctic Peninsula and Weddell Sea with the Falklands Islands, in search of the second largest penguin, the King Penguin. This voyage sets out from Ushuaia at the tip of Argentina, but a free flight to the Chilean capital of Santiago is included from the end point of the voyage at Port Stanley in the Falkland Islands.

Antarctic Peninsula & Weddell Sea 12 days Itinerary
Please note the itinerary below is provided to give you a flavour of the voyage only and is based on a 12 days voyage. A 13 days voyage will spend longer in similar locations. The ship's route will be decided by the captain and may vary from the above in accordance with ice, weather and other conditions.
Day 1
In the afternoon, we leave Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, the picturesque southernmost city in the world located at the Beagle Channel and sail through this scenic waterway for the rest of the evening.

Day 2-3
During these two days we will sail across the Drake Passage. When we cross the Antarctic Convergence, we arrive in the circum-Antarctic up welling zone. In this area we may meet Wandering Albatrosses, Grey Headed Albatrosses, Black-browed Albatrosses, Light-mantled Sooty Albatrosses, Cape Pigeons, Southern Fulmars, Wilson’s Storm Petrels, Blue Petrels and Antarctic Petrels. Near the South Shetland Islands, we glimpse at the first icebergs.
Day 4-9
We will sail into the Weddell Sea and visit Dundee Island, where we might have an extensive walk. We also plan to visit Paulet Island with a million pairs of Adelie Penguins and the remains of the Nordenskiöld expedition, Seymour Island, where many fossils have been found, and Snow Hill Island, where polar expeditions as early as 1902 wintered. We may even reach Cape Longing at the Larsen Ice Shelf. In this area we meet huge table icebergs from the Ronne Ice Shelf and can hope for opportunities to spot Emperor Penguins on ice floes. When we turn north again, we visit Brown Bluff on the Antarctic Continent.

We sail south and plan to offer a zodiac cruise around the rarely visited Astrolabe Island where Antarctic Fulmars, Chinstrap Penguins, Brown Skuas and Blue-eyed Shags breed and Weddell Seals and Antarctic Fur Seals haul out.
In Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay we reach the southernmost area of our voyage, where we have again the opportunity to set foot on the Antarctic Continent in a magnificent landscape of huge glaciers. In this area we have good chances to see Humpback Whales and Minke Whales.
Deception Island, we will try to land at Baily Head with a colony of ten thousands of Chinstrap Penguins. Deception Island is a huge volcano of which the crater opens into the sea, creating a natural harbour for the ship. Here we find hot springs, an abandoned whaling station, Cape Pigeons and Dominican Gulls, Brown and South Polar Skuas and Antarctic Terns. Wilson’s Storm Petrels and Black-bellied Storm Petrels nest in the ruins of the whaling station in Whalers Bay. We continue to Hannah Point, which has a very rich wildlife featuring Elephant Seals, Cape Pigeons, Southern Giant Petrels, Macaroni Penguins and Gentoo Penguins.
Day 10-11
At In the Drake Passage we have again a chance of seeing many seabirds.
Day 12
We arrive in the morning and disembark in Ushuaia.
