Costa Rica Adventure & Wildlife

Costa Rica is one of the most inspiring tropical wilderness and wildlife locations for active exploration. We can design active wildlife and scenic journeys throughout the country, tailored to the interests, ages and energy levels of you and your group; but this trip provides an ideal template for exploring some of the country's most inspiring locations in ways which are ideally suited for appreciating each particular environment.

The rich waterside wildlife of the Tortuguero National Park makes this Caribbean coastal rainforest wilderness an ideal target for wildlife viewing by kayak.  The forest here is intersected by waterways and often flooded, which makes travel on foot almost impossible, but perfect for quiet exploration of on the water. From canoes and flat bottom boats, you can expect to see howler monkeys, capuchins, toucans, parrots and more, especially at daybreak which is when we most like to take you out by paddle.

Between July - September the Tortuguero's Caribbean beaches are the Western Hemisphere's most important egg laying zone for Green Turtles; so whilst you can explore the forest by day, you can observe the unforgettable sight of a female turtle labouring her way onto a beach and digging a metre deep hole in which to lay her eggs.

Upstream from these Caribbean locations we can find deep river gorges and white water which includes Rio Pacuare. Pacuare provides Costa Rica's wildest Grade IV rapids and here you will join a white water rafting team, surrounded by protected forests and some stunning river gorge scenery.

Going yet higher in altitude, we take you to explore one of Central America's most active volcanoes: Arenal. Here we take you mountain biking and horseback riding through dramatic scenery and cloud forest rich in orchids, tree ferns, hummingbirds and other avian life. We also take you into the canopy, both on foot and by means of the longest series of zip lines (flying foxes) in the country. The trekking here is excellent, both within the canopy and above it by means of 'hanging bridges' built across steep river valleys. Perhaps most dramatic of all for trekking is a full day's ascent we will take you on to the crater lake lost in forest on Cerro Chato.

From the Caribbean and Central Highlands, we next take you to the Pacific Ocean and perhaps the most beautiful coastal national park in Costa Rica: Manuel Antonio.  This is where we take to sea kayaks, exploring on one day the park itself and on another amongst mangroves and the stunning Damas Island.

Corcovado National Park option

If you can manage an extra 2 days then we can replace your experience at Manuel Antonio with an experience deeper into Pacific coast lowland rainforest in the Corcovado National Park. Here we can take you to snorkel or dive at the country's best near shore marine park at Caño Island - often a great place for seeing dolphins, whales, sea turtles and a huge amount of fish life. We can also take you into the heart of the Corcovado National Park where if you don't mind the dormitory accommodation of a remote ranger station, our guide can lead you rainforest trekking amongst spider monkeys, black howlers, coatimundis, groups of more than a hundred peccary (wild pigs), tapir, parrots, toucans, macaws and even sharks swimming up rivers on the high tide.

Please note that this is a tailor made itinerary which can be altered according to your personal interests. All activities within this trip are run by activity experts and guides. Age restrictions do apply, but alternatives can be arranged such as wildlife focused slow water rafting, or learning to surf Costa Rica's famous Pacific Ocean waves. Additional diving and snorkelling can also easily be arranged, whether that be for experienced divers or to learn how to dive.
