The Sanctuary at Roche Caiman is an artificial wetland site, situated between the Roche Caiman housing estate and the National Sports Complex.  It was created following extensive reclamation work on the east coast of Mahé in 1986 and is the only urban wetland reserve in the Seychelles.  In 2002, the management of the sanctuary was handed over to Nature Seychelles, a non-government organisation, experienced in habitat and environmental conservation.

The wetland, which consists almost entirely of fresh water, consists of areas of both permanently deep and permanently shallow water habitats.  A multitude of plant, bird, insect, amphibian, reptile and other animals survive in and rely on the various habitats within the sanctuary.  It has become a real safe haven for wader birds, including Green Shanks, Terek Sandpipers, Wimbrels, Yellow Bitterns, Black Crown Night Herons and Green Back Night Herons.

The Roche Caiman Sanctuary has thus become a valuable resource for national conservation education and research.  It features an information kiosk and a bird hide, facilitating the provision of information, unique views of flora and fauna within the wetlands and enabling both researchers and the public alike to more fully understand and appreciate the dynamics of a freshwater ecosystem.
