Argentina - A Regional Travel Guide

Argentina.  Stretching for 3500km from the sub-tropical North to the southernmost tip of South American, Argentina is a land and sea of incredible diversity. It is the world's eighth largest country, boasting the tallest mountains in the western hemisphere; sub tropical rainforests and the magnificent Iguazu Falls in the north; to the Valdes Peninsula, whose Southern Right Whales, Orcas, Penguins and Sealions provide one of the marine highlights of the Continent.

It is impossible to see everything that Argentina has to offer in a single visit, but to help to compare and select destinations within the country, here is a guide. If you click on the image alongside each introduction you will be taken to a more detailed description for that area, along with sample itineraries.   Peninsula Valdes is located on the Northern edge of Patagonia, about half way between Cape Horn and Buenos Aires. Valdes is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to the concentration of marine mammals that gather here in spectacular numbers….

The Lake District of Argentina is a spectacular area of towering snow capped volcanoes, huge stretches of untrammelled forest and hundreds of sky blue glacial lakes spread like jewels down the Argentine / Chilean border. For those who enjoy downhill skiing, this is one of the best areas in the world…

Mendoza, an elegant modern city with an excellent summer climate and wide tree lined boulevards, is the attractive entrance point to the Central Andean region and an area that can never be said to have a shortage of attractions.
Foremost on the minds of many will be the region's renowned wines…
Patagonia is a rugged and spectacular area of extreme contrasts: from windswept plains and lonely estancias; vast glaciers of the Southern Patagonian Ice-Sheet; to the magnificent sheer sided mountains rising precipitously along the Chilean border.
Salta and the Northwest The elegant colonial city of Salta is the entrance point to Argentina's Northwest, a region of stark eroded river canyons, spectacular high altitude Andean Plains and mountains cloaked in diverse cloud forest.
Iguazu Falls in Argentina's far north east, is one of Argentina's and Brazil's most famous experiences. These spectacular falls and surrounding rainforests are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and listed amongst the new Seven Wonders of the World. They deserve their status with the falls spanning 4 kilometres wide and boasting around 275 separate cascades.
Esteros del Ibera. Covering 13000km² of Corrientes Province, the vast subtropical wetlands of the Provincial Reserve are little known outside of Argentina, but offer some of the country's best wildlife watching. It also has some wonderful estancias (working farms) where the horse is mightier than other forms of transport, and so the gaucho lifestyle can be experienced first hand.
Buenos Aires situated in the vast estuary of the Rio de la Plata, enjoys a humid and generally warm climate - sometimes rising to the high 30o C's in the Southern Summer. Combined with its colonial origins comes a distinctly Mediterranean sense of style and a real energy and dynamism that is uniquely Argentinean.
